For the first time in over 100 years, Matisse: The Red Studio reunites the masterpiece with the surviving six paintings, ceramic, and three sculptures it depicts. Focusing on the genesis and history of Matisse’s The Red Studio (1911), the exhibition also features never-before-seen archival photographs and letters alongside related paintings and drawings. A section of the exhibition is devoted to conservation science and recent discoveries about the process of the painting’s making. A creative space within the exhibition also invites visitors of all ages to draw, write, and reflect on the spaces and colors that inspire them.
