This exceptional Korean eight-panel screen is decorated with the tiger hunt theme popular during the 19th century. The painting exemplifies the bravery and skill of the hunters, finely depicted in fashionable attire and bearing elaborate banners in pursuit of tigers, foxes, boars, and deer across a rocky landscape. The eight painted panels were acquired in the 1970s and cleaned, conserved, and mounted in the traditional Korean style. Available at Leland Little's Sept. 21 fall auction.
Polish painter Tadeusz Styka was born to an artistic family—both his father, Jan Styka, and his brother, Adam, were accomplished artists. Tadeusz was a widely sought after society portraitist, and this painting is a refreshing and charming depiction of his own family at play in the waters off the coast of France. The figure in this painting by artist Henry Scott Tuke is Charlie Mitchell, who was Tuke's chief boat handler and one of the artist's most regular models. From 1962 to 1975, Allan Houser taught sculpture at the Institute of the American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, eventually becoming the head of the sculpture department. During that period, and following, the artist was prolific, producing a variety of figures and busts in bronze, steel, and other metals. "War Pony" represents Houser's synthesis between natural forms and the abstract and will be available at Bonham's Modern Native American Art sale Sept. 16 in Los Angeles.
Regarded as one of India's preeminent modern artists, Maqbool Fida Husain was prolific with his horse paintings, as well as other subjects. Influenced by ancient Chinese depictions of equines, Husain signed this work and also inscribed it with Chinese letters.
