About The Artist
Alfred Charles Jerome Collins, commonly known as Charles Collins, was born in Hampstead in 1851. His father, George Edward Collins, was a painter and etcher. From a young age, Charles began creating artwork, focusing primarily on landscapes featuring cattle and figures. He studied at the West London School of Art but soon felt that the institution was hindering his artistic style. By 1876, Collins was residing at Sherwood House on Arundel Road in Dorking, where he married Georgiana Waddingham at St. Martin's Church. The couple had nine children, many of whom appeared in his paintings. Two of his sons went on to become painters themselves. Collins gained recognition for his watercolor and oil paintings, particularly his figures, rustic scenes, and genre works.
