About The Artist
Howell, originally graduating with a Biology degree from Colorado State University, transitioned from managing stock brokerage firms in Denver to become a self-taught landscape painter in 1993. He devotes much of his time to painting outdoors, embracing plein air techniques year-round, even in winter. He then uses these outdoor studies to create larger studio paintings. Howell believes plein air painting captures a unique, honest quality unachievable with studio photographs. Collectors admire his ability to evoke strong emotions and capture the essence of a location, particularly the beauty of landscapes. His confident technique and deep affection for the Rocky Mountain West are evident. Howell's large-scale works, some exceeding 48 by 60 inches, continually captivate and draw viewers back.
