Arthur B. Davies
About The Artist
Arthur B. Davies (1862–1928) was an American painter and influential figure in the early 20th-century art scene. Born in Utica, New York, Davies co-founded the progressive Eight and later, the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, which organized the groundbreaking Armory Show of 1913. Known for his ethereal and symbol-laden compositions, Davies' work often blurred the boundaries between realism and abstraction. His paintings, such as "Fantasy" (1912), showcased dreamlike landscapes and mythical figures, reflecting his interest in spirituality and symbolism. While primarily associated with American Modernism, Davies' eclectic style also drew from Post-Impressionism and Symbolism. His advocacy for avant-garde art and his role in promoting modernist movements in the United States contributed significantly to the development of American art in the early 20th century.
