About the Item: Gouache portrait of a musician playing a violin. Housed in Very Good condition wooden frame with brown and beige matting. Dimensions in frame: height 66.5cm x width 58.5 cm. Dimensions measured: 35 cm x 41.1cm. Gouache on very thin tissue paper. Paper fragile with slight warping and crinkling. Small tears and chips detached to each corner from mounting. Signed and dated "Ricardo Martinez de Hoyos -42" in bottom right corner. With a slip from the Galería de Arte Mexicano, Mexico City.
About The Artist
Ricardo Martinez de Hoyos (1918 - 2009) was a Mexican painter and is known for his surreal, abstract image painting figures. He was born to a large family in Mexico City comprise of 16 siblings which five of them would pursue a carreer related to the fine arts. In addition to painting, Martínez illustrated books, mostly by writer friends. Martínez’s first recognition for his work was the Raúl Beillers Prize in 1967, followed by the Moinho Santista Prize at the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1971. In 2008, the Mexican capital awarded him the Medalla de la Ciudad de México and named him a distinguished citizen.
