About The Artist
Howard Hodgkin, born on August 6, 1932, in London, England, was a revered British artist known for his vibrant and emotionally charged paintings. Growing up in a culturally rich environment with an amateur watercolorist father and an art historian mother, Hodgkin's artistic sensibilities were cultivated early on. After studying at the Camberwell School of Art and the Bath Academy of Art, Hodgkin's works, heavily influenced by abstract expressionism, defied categorization, preferring to describe himself simply as a painter rather than aligning with any specific movement. His paintings, characterized by bold colors, gestural brushwork, and intimate subject matter, reflected emotional situations rather than recognizable objects. Associated with the "New British Painting" movement of the 1980s, Hodgkin gained international acclaim, receiving awards such as the Turner Prize in 1985 and a knighthood in 1992. He passed away on March 9, 2017, leaving behind a legacy of revolutionary and emotionally resonant artwork, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the expressive power of color and form in his works on canvas, paper, and print.
