About the Item: Jillian Evelyn’s paintings have a distinctly clean and flat style. Evelyn depicts female figures with a limited, but vibrant color palette. Her figures don’t acknowledge the viewer with eye contact; they’re all looking off into the distance and seem to be deep in thought which, among other things, show that despite the nudity in these works, they weren’t intended to be sexual. The cramped compositions create a little bit of stress and claustrophobia which are meant to reflect the chaos, struggle, and anxiety of womanhood, while the slightly distorted limbs, breasts and posture relate to the awkwardness and uncomfortability of being a woman and having a female body. This work was made for "Distant Figures", a group show at LaiSun Keane (November 1 - December 22, 2024).
